Ancient Philippi

It has a rich history with many historical events that took place here, that are known around the world. The ancient Roman Road "Via Egnatia", which parts of it still remain even today, crossed Kavala. The "Via Egntia" is same road that the Roman Armies marched on when traveling to Philippi for the great battle between Brutus and Mark Anthony. Also the Apostle Paul traveled this road during his ministries. Paul left the city and went to the riverbank where he found Lydia and other women gathering for prayer (Acts 16:13-15). Lydia a seller of purple fabric became the first to be baptized on European soil. A small Christian church and baptismal font has been built on the spot, and the place and church are called Lydia.
