Hubby called for me to take a look and his new find…

Let me introduce your to Sally [Dot] Mander

In the area of Sarah’s Pond we have post holes already dug to accommodate fencing to keep the ducks out of the Koi pond.
Low and behold in one of the holes was Sally
Eventually, after it was obvious she needed assistance getting out…she was ever so
gently released into the small stream that we refer to as the “Dreen”.
I was weed eating in that area and I kept a close eye on her as she slowly regained
her strength and gently swam away to safety.
Spotted Salamander Ambystoma maculatum
She was large and maybe SHE was responsible for the Glutinous Glob in the Koi pond .
Habitat
Spotted salamanders require
woodlands with ponds for breeding. Petranka (1998) states that mature deciduous forest is the main habitat
type for the spotted salamander, but Minton (1972) also makes note
of mixed hardwood habitats.
Vernal pools are very important for breeding.
Fish free ponds are best,
but Figiel and Semlitsch (1990) found that larvae may
change habitat usage to survive in ponds containing fish.
Then there are their HABITS!

I LOVE this post! We used to see Salamanders in Kentucky all the time... all different colors, and I thought they were SO cool. Sally is definitely a beauty with her yellow spots. Your narration of this post made is SO fun!

Seriously you all, I was just sitting in front of the PC this a.m. wanting to post the pictures of the Awesome Salamander. I got tickled and had such FUN with the post…it was not until I began visiting TOM that I even knew about the Critter thing…
Ummm I thought, why not, Most of the posting will not be quite as pftern because the weather HAD turned nice, until today at 36 degrees.
Um I thought I usually do take pictures of critters and flowers etc………..ummmmmmmm right up my alley…
SO here I am…for as often as I have time…
I shall endeavor to comment on as many participants as humanly possible..
Glad you like Sally…I will note that her rescue was using a rounded plant steak so she would not be harmed…AND the need NOT to touch her as she might bite…
Bottom line she is well and off to do what Nature intends her life to be.
Living on a mini farm we see lots of THINGS… ;)

Wow, I wish we had a salamander around here. I was surprised to see a frog in the pond last week. It must have overwintered in the bottom muck.

Sally is pretty. I don't think I've ever seen one of these, unless in the zoo. I'm glad she was rescued and safe.

How very neat! I haven't seen a salamander in years. Sadly a loss and habitat and pollution has lessened their numbers around here. They seem like such a fragile little creature.
