The Atlantis Submarine, St. Thomas! The tour starts from Charlotte Amalie, with a boat ride to Bucks Island, complimentary Rum Punch is served. This boat ride is a welcome diversion from the heat .When you arrive at Bucks Island, you tie off to the Atlantis II submarine and board this small, $4,000,000.00 excursion sub, holds about 30 people.
This submarine is not another glass bottom boat, it is a real sub which will take you on a tour of the reefs for 50 minutes at depths of 86 feet. At first your vision is normal and the color perception changes, a natural occurance that they will explain to you. Suddenly you see Yellow Tail Snapper and Sea Turtles outside the portals, most at too great a distance to photograph of course. As you approach the reefs you might see an occassional Reef Shark.
We passed Bucks Island as we came into port. The Captain on the Submarine said the Lighthouse on this Island was the second oldest
one other than the one in San Juan. Of course when I ran into this bit of information I needed to share it.
In late 2003 the COAST GUARD was in the process of nominating the site for the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, the Coast Guard has declared the light station to be excess property, and the General Services Administration is in the process of transferring it to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which owns the rest of the island as the Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge.
My photos did not turn out as well as I anticapated. A short video.
***An aside from Antigua! Our Tour Guide told us Eric Clapton has a residence in Shirley Heights, also Whitney Houston.
