Wood Ducks

Or Canard branchu

OR (Aix sponsa)
**********
The Wood Duck nests in trees near water, sometimes directly over water, but other times up to 2 km (1.2 mi) away. After hatching, the ducklings jump down from the nest tree and make their way to water. The mother calls them to her, but does not help them in any way. The ducklings may jump from heights of up to 89 m (290 ft) without injury.
**** The wood duck is known for its striking beauty and is no doubt one the most beautiful ducks in the world. It is considered to be a perching duck, with shaped clawed feet also webbed for swimming. At the turn of the century, the wood duck was near extinction. Today however, because of rigorous new laws, the wood ducks population is deemed safe.

Hi 'D'
I'm so glad you have posted about these, we have these over here but we also have the Manadrin Duck as well.
http://www.honoluluzoo.org/mandarin_duck.htm
I get them mixed up all the time.. they look so alike. They also have different scientific names
You Wood Duck 'Aix sponsa' translates into "waterbird in bridal dress." so fitting for the birds beauty... yet of course it's the male as the female is rather drab compared to him... ha! A bit like me and Jane.. ( don't tell her I said that ;o) )

I have some great pictures of Mandarins.. I'ii post them next week.

I think just living out from the ‘CITY” has been a blessing in many respects…
My hubby and I were both raised as “city” kids…

We sure have learned a lot and there is MORE to learn, for sure

Actually in the woods near the home we put an old mailbox up for the wood ducks, left the hinged front off…we do not think they have ever used it

But if a stranger walks in the woods it is rather odd to happen onto a mailbox with the creek being the “road”

Will check your site out Tom…
"Water bird in bridal dress." Awwwwwwwwwwww that is so romantic…

Looking forward to your Mandarins

Yes Abraham we know we are lucky…

Kerri they are a rather skittish bird…be willing to sit quietly for a time…
